Radiation Therapy

A Career of Giving Hope

What You'll Learn

Students in the Radiation Therapy program at Ivy Tech learn about what radiation therapy is and how to use it to provide care to patients fighting cancer.

If you're asking yourself, "What is radiation therapy?" a quick answer to get you started is:

  • Radiation Therapy is a form of treatment that utilizes ionizing radiation in a strictly controlled environment to eliminate or reverse disease, primarily cancer.
  • High-energy x-ray, gamma, proton, and electron beams are common forms of ionizing radiation used.
  • Ionizing radiation can be administered using external beam therapy or by placing a radioactive material directly into a body tissue or cavity.

Hands-on Learning

This all may sound complicated now—and the technology is—but through hands-on learning opportunities such as Virtual Linear Accelerator (VERT), Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning System, and Clinical Rotations, our students leave confident and prepared to make a difference in people's lives. Learning takes place not only in traditional classroom and lab settings but also in real healthcare settings like hospitals and specialized outpatient clinics.

Career Options

Graduates of the Ivy Tech Radiation Therapy program are eligible to take the national registry examination given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Upon passing this exam, you can start your career as a Radiation Therapist. Common working environments include hospitals, outpatient clinics, and cancer centers.

Student Success

90% of graduates from 2017–2021 have passed the credentialing examination on their 1st attempt.*

Preparation for the National Registry Exam

Ivy Tech's curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for the national registry exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), which is the exam taken to secure licensing as a radiation therapist. Graduates who successfully pass the exam have opportunities to obtain entry-level radiation therapist positions in a variety of healthcare areas, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and cancer centers.

Once admitted to the program, an Associate of Science in Radiation Therapy degree can be achieved in 5 semesters, or about two years.

    Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree

Graduates of the program can also choose to transfer to a four-year college or university where they can earn a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Management, Health Services, and Health Administration. This path would be beneficial for someone who is interested in eventually pursuing a career in healthcare management, where you help run the administrative side of hospitals or other medical facilities.

Ivy Tech has multiple partnerships with universities that ensure credits from your associate degree transfer directly toward your bachelor's should you be accepted in the program. These partnerships are outlined in articulation agreements. It is likely that your associate degree from Ivy Tech will also count towards bachelor's programs where we do not have articulation agreements, but you will need to discuss this with an advisor of the four-year university in order to determine which credits will transfer.

    Required Courses

Associate degree graduates must complete a total of 70 credit hours:

    • 27 general education course credits, which include the following prerequisite courses:
      • APHY 101 Anatomy & Physiology I
      • APHY 102 Anatomy & Physiology II
      • MATH 136 College Algebra
      • HLHS 101 Medical Terminology

Request information

The Ivy Tech Radiation Therapy program can be a challenging, yet rewarding, program. Before you apply, review the following requirements and expectations for students.

Time Commitment

The Associate of Science in Radiation Therapy program requires a major commitment of time and energy. Radiation Therapy courses are typically scheduled over three-five days per week. Students may also need to schedule additional general education courses as needed each semester. It is essential that you plan for the same amount of study time as class time per week. Course schedules and assignment due dates will not be adjusted to accommodate individual work schedules.

You can expect to spend the following hours each week in active contact for your courses:

Course Type Course Length Contact Hours per Credit Hour
Lecture 8-week courses

2 classroom contact hours per credit hour

So if a class is worth 3 credit hours, expect 6 contact hours

16-week courses

1 classroom contact hour per credit hour

So if a class is worth 3 credit hours, expect 3 contact hours

Lab 8-week courses

4 lab contact hours per credit hour

16-week courses

2 lab contact hours per credit hour
Clinical

8-week courses

10 clinical contact hours per credit hour

16-week courses

5 clinical contact hours per credit hour

Attendance

Students are expected to attend all class meetings, or other activities assigned as a part of a course of instruction. Attendance is necessary to maximize student-learning opportunities. Students who are absent are responsible for missed material. Clinical courses require that the student be present to effectively evaluate successful achievement of clinical course objectives and concepts, as clinical course objectives cannot be accomplished or evaluated outside the clinical setting. There are no make-up sessions for missed clinical hours; therefore, regular clinical attendance is mandatory for successful clinical course and program completion.

These clinical locations may be up to a 1.5 hour drive in any direction of the Ivy Tech full-service campus where you are enrolled. Carefully consider the implications of being accepted to a campus requiring extended driving distances.

Mandatory Drug Testing and Criminal Background Screening

All Radiation Therapy program clinical affiliates require mandatory drug testing and criminal background screening before allowing students to participate in clinical courses at their facilities. Results of these tests could impact your ability to complete clinical courses and therefore, your ability to meet program requirements for completion. Requiring criminal background and drug screenings ensures students meet the same standards as health care facility employees. Annual criminal background and drug screenings are required for all Radiation Therapy students.

Eligibility for Licensure

Successful program completion provides students eligibility to apply to take the national registry examination given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The application for licensure includes questions about criminal history, substance abuse problems, malpractice judgments, and disciplinary action on previous licenses and certifications. Students are encouraged to review the questions located on the ARRT application for examination. Similar questions are found on state board of health applications for states that require a state license in addition to the national ARRT license.

If an applicant answers yes to any of the questions located on the ARRT application for examination, it is possible that an applicant would not be eligible for licensure or face license restrictions after completing the Radiation Therapy program. Read more about the licensure application and ethics requirements

Radiation Therapy Program Student Requirements

The Assessment Technologies Institute’s (ATI) Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is used as part of the admissions process by the Ivy Tech School of Health Sciences selective admissions programs.

Schedule Your TEAS Test Appointment Now

Test Components

The ATI TEAS test measures your ability in four categories: Reading, English, Math, and Science. Your TEAS test must include all four test components to be considered valid; partial tests will not be accepted. Applicants must score at the PROFICIENT level or higher to be considered for admission. ATI TEAS adjusted individual total score will be used in the selection point system.

Preparing for the TEAS Test

A good time for a high school student to take the ATI TEAS test is during the last semester of high school or upon graduation. If an interested student graduated from high school a year or more ago, the test should be taken after review of high school content and after you’ve completed at least a portion of the prerequisite courses for the Radiation Therapy program. All candidates must attend an Ivy Tech online Radiation Therapy information session prior to taking the TEAS exam.

Test Deadlines & Timing

These dates will not change and will be consistent from year to year:

Semester TO Start

Test Deadline Date

Application OPEN

Fall April 30 March 15 – May 15

TEAS testing must be completed within the published application deadline (see table above) in order to be considered for the corresponding application period. Due to processing time for the ATI TEAS to appear in the student’s application, it is recommended that testing times be scheduled two to four weeks prior to the posted TEAS test deadline date. ATI TEAS scores not available by the deadlines will not be considered.

Applicants who take the ATI TEAS at schools other than Ivy Tech must contact Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) to have an official copy electronically submitted directly to Ivy Tech.

ATI TEAS Test scores will be valid for two years from the date of the initial ATI TEAS test for the Radiation Therapy program and must be valid through the application deadline date. ATI TEAS tests that expire prior to the application deadline will be ineligible for consideration towards program admission, even if the student applies prior to the application deadline.

Repeat Testing

The ATI TEAS test may be taken up to 3 times in a one-year period regardless of the testing location. After your first attempt, you must wait at least 14 days prior to retaking your exam (day of initial testing is day 0). Applicants must pay the approved testing fee with each attempt. ATI TEAS tests that expire prior to the application deadline will be ineligible for consideration towards program admission, even if the student applies prior to the application deadline.

Taking the Test & Costs

The test takes approximately 3 1/2 hours to complete. Currently, only remote tests are being conducted. You will need your valid (non-expired) government-issued photo ID. All TEAS exam appointments must be made and paid for online through our self-serve site. The Remote TEAS exam fee for Ivy Tech students is $81 ($141 for non-students, but this is not available currently).

Save time on test day by setting up your computer in advance. View the Proctorio Student Training video.

Selective Admissions

Admission to the Radiation Therapy program at Ivy Tech is highly competitive. The program has a selective admissions process, which means not all students who apply to the program will be accepted. Selective admission processes are needed because there are more people interested in taking courses in our program than there are seats available.

Weighted Point System

A weighted point system is used to evaluate applicants for admission. Student applications are assigned points on the following criteria: Grades, Pre-admission testing, and Certifications as applicable to the program. Applicants with the highest scores are accepted across 8 rounds of auto-selection within each application period. Point totals for applicants receiving admission offers will vary between application periods. Point totals are not shared.

Total Points Possible: 140 + 5 optional Healthcare Certification points

  • General Education Course Points: 120 points possible. Points are awarded based on prerequisite course grades.
  • ATI TEAS points: 20 points possible. Calculated as 20% of the Adjusted Individual Total Score
  • Healthcare Certification points: 5 optional points possible with current certification documentation of the approved healthcare professions (see list below). We accept verifications for active certifications in all states.

Tie Breaker Points:

  • Ivy Tech GPA

General Education Weighted Point System

When multiple course attempts are reported on applicant transcripts (including transcripts from other colleges and universities), the highest earned grade of the first three attempts will be used for the selection decision score through the application period. Points for courses transferred from other institutions will be awarded from the grade recorded on the transcript from the other institution provided transfer credit appears on the Ivy Tech transcript. Points for verified credit (V) or college credit awarded through High School Advanced Placement, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) International Baccalaureate (IB) and Dantes Subject Standardized Test (DSST), will be awarded as indicated below.
